Here are the answers to some Frequently Asked Questions.
How much does a custom knife cost?
The cost can vary greatly based on the size, finish, and handle material of the knife you order. In general, my knives sell for between $100.00 and $300.00.
What kind of handle material can I get?
I usually have a few colors of Micarta on hand. I also try to keep a variety of woods (both domestic and exotic) on hand. If there is anything you’ve seen that you are interested in we can definitely talk about it, and I can see if I can order it for you.
What kind of handle material SHOULD I get?
Whatever you thinks look best. The only caveat I’ll give you is that if you want something that will hold up and be resistant to liquids you should get a Micarta, G10, or stabilized wood.
What’s carbon steel?
Carbon steel is simply a steel that’s high in carbon. This makes it possible to harden the steel so it will take and hold a sharp edge. Carbon steel does NOT have a high percentage of chromium. This means that special care is required to prevent rusting. Also, with use, and over time, carbon steel will develop a patina that turns the steel a gray color. I do have a finish available which darkens the blade to almost black. This helps to protect the steel. Though the edge still needs to be protected. Carbon steel is preferred by some because it is generally easier to sharpen than stainless steel.
Help! My knife is changing to this weird gray color!
It’s OK. That’s called patina. It’s just the reaction carbon steel has to use. This is especially true when it’s used to cut acidic foods like lemons or tomatoes. For more information refer to the What’s Carbon Steel FAQ.
How do I take care of my knife?
There are several things you can do to maintain your knife’s function and appearance. First and foremost NEVER put your knife in the dishwasher. If you need to wash it. Wash it by hand, and dry it immediately. Another great thing you can do is to frequently apply a light coating of oil to your blade. I provide a small bottle of food safe mineral oil with all the knives I sell. Lastly, if you are going to be storing your knife for an extended period of time it is best to store it out of the sheath.
Do I get a sheath with my knife?
The short answer is ‘yes’. The long answer is I include the cost of a kydex sheath into the quote I’ll give you after we work out what you want. I can also make a leather sheath for an upcharge, or if you’d like a bit of a discount I can give you your knife without a sheath.
What sort of oil should I use to protect my knife from rusting?
Any sort of oil will work. Mineral oil is nice because it is a food safe option. 3 in 1 oil would probably be my next choice. WD40 works, but tends to evaporate a little more quickly than other choices.
Can I put my knife in the dishwasher?
NO! Just…no.
Can I put my knife in my dish strainer to dry?
Also no.
But…then how do I clean my knife?
If you need to wash it. Wash it by hand, and dry it by hand immediately.
I chose a natural wood for my handle and it seems to be drying out. What do I do now?
Not to worry. You can use some boiled linseed oil, or some mineral oil to bring it back to life. Just rub on a healthy coating. Let it soak in for five minutes or so, and then wipe it off.
What are my responsibilities when purchasing a knife from North Mountain Knives?
It is your responsibility to make sure the knife you want is legal in your area, and to use your knife responsibly and legally.
How long will it take for me to get my knife?
I can’t give you a hard and fast number here. There are just too many factors. First, this is a moonlighting endeavor for me. I have a full time job. So how fast I can finish and ship knives is largely dependent on how much “free” time I have to get in the knife shop. Second, I keep an order list, and am constantly adding people to it. So there are probably going to be several people ahead of you. Third, my family is always going to be my number one priority. So if there is something they need me for I’m going to work on that before I work on knives.
But I want a knife now? Is there a way I can get one quicker?
I do occasionally make “extra” knives. Those knives I post for sale on Instagram and Facebook. They are first come, first served. So, if you want the best shot at getting one. Follow me on IG and FB, turn on notifications, and comment, “I’ll take it,” as soon as you see one you want.
When is your shop open? Can I come for a visit?
I don’t keep regular shop hours. If you are in Davis feel free to email or message me. If I’m available you are more than welcome to stop in and see me.
